J.W. CUMMINGS was born in Decatur County, Iowa, April l4, l860. On January 8, l880 he was married to MISS ELIZABETH SEXTON. To this union was born one son who died in infancy. His wife departed this life Aug. ll, l88l. On June l7, l883, he was joined in holy wedlock to MISS IDA B. BULLINGTON. To this union were born 4 children; all of whom are living.
Bro. CUMMINGS joined the Baptist Church when about l8 years of age and has lived a consistent life ever since. He was initiated into the mysteries of Odd Fellowship Nov. l, l890 and has conducted himself in such a way that he exalted the principle of the order. Bro. CUMMINGS has been ailing for 7 or 8 years, and was confined to his room for the past two years and died May 23, l897, aged 37 years, l month and 9 days. Bro. CUMMINGS expressed a willingness to depart, if it was the Lord's will. He had a desire to live to care for his family whom he loved dearly.
His wife and four children will miss him in the home. Sister CUMMINGS has been deprived of a true and loving husband, the children of a loving father, the church of one of its lights, the order of I.O.O.F. of a worthy brother, the community of an honest and worthy citizen.
Bro. CUMMINGS commanded the respect of the business men of Davis City and of all who came in contact with him.
The funeral was conducted under the direction of the I.O.O.F. rendering short ritual services at the Union Church, May 29th at 3 o'clock p.m. followed by a sermon by Rev. Geo. E. Mitchell, after which the remains were interred in the Davis City Cemetery where the ritualistic service of the order was finished. The bereaved family and the relatives have the sympathy of the entire community.
