Here is an explanation I have heard and it seems very plausible.
Many of our ancestors were illiterate and actually didn't know how to spell the family name. When they registered for something (ie military service) the person taking the registration probably wasn't the most literate person in the world either, and even if they were, they were making a best guess out of the name spelling. It seems likely to me that we are all of the same line, your guess is as good as anyone's as to which spelling is the true "correct" spelling.
