SHREVEPORT, LA - Brittany Danielle Burford, 19, passed away at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, September 26, 2009, at Texas Children's Hospital, Houston, Texas, following a lengthy battle with Lymphangiomatosis.

Brittany was born July 29, 1990, in Shreveport, the youngest of four children. Raised in Shreveport she attended A. C. Steere Elementary, Youree Middle School, and Calvary Baptist Academy, where she was a member of the National Junior Honor Society and choir and active in many service projects. She loved Calvary and all her friends and teachers there. Brittany particularly looked forward to chapel each week where the depth of her Faith was openly expressed, frequently asking her classmates to pray for those in need and testifying to God's glorious works, even as she struggled to come to terms with her own illness. Brittany made it her personal mission to seek out newcomers to her beloved school and make them feel welcome. Unfortunately, complications of her illness forced her to leave Calvary in the middle of her junior year. It broke her heart to have to leave school, but she continued her education and was nearing completion of home school courses to earn her high school diploma at the time of her death.

Brittany enjoyed music, movies, and reading; wrote short stories and poetry. More than anything she loved to laugh and make others laugh. On the worst days she still sought out the humor in the situation. She was a gentle and generous young lady. Even as her illness took its toll, leaving her little body weak and fatigued, she would make time to listen and find strength to offer counsel to those in need. Her hope was to conquer her illness, go to college, and enter a profession wherein she could help others. She enjoyed helping children and last Spring began volunteering at University Elementary School. Generous in death as in life, Brittany asked that her body be studied in hopes of learning more about the disease with which she struggled and then donated to Life Gift Organ Procurement of Southeast Texas so that others might benefit.

Her maternal grandmother, Pennie Watson Shine Pearcy and her step-grandfather, Ross B. Nelson, Jr., preceded Brittany in death.

She is survived by her parents Lisa Kaye and Charles Joseph Klepper of Shreveport; father Byron D. Burford; brothers Damian A. Burford of Colorado Springs, CO, and Benjamin D. Burford of Shreveport; sister and brother-in-law Ryan Alexandria and William Waldrip of Shreveport and their children Liam and Chloe; step-sister Emily Lauren Klepper of Shreveport; grandparents Fred A. and Daurice C. Shine of Dallas; step-grandparents William and Jane Pearcy of Pueblo, CO, and Jeanie Klepper Nelson of Shreveport; great-grandmother Ruth Rogers Young of Enid, OK; uncle and aunt James R. and Helen E. Shine of Dallas; and numerous other aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends.

The family will receive friends in the chapel at Osborn Funeral Home beginning at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 3, 2009 with Memorial Services to follow in the chapel at 3:00 p.m. Officiating will be Rev. David Brice of Kings Highway Christian Church. In lieu of flowers please make donations in Brittany's name to the Lymphangiomatosis & Gorham's Disease Alliance, 19919 Villa Lante Place, Boca Raton, FL 33434, ( to further research into this exceedingly rare disease.
