Below are my research notes on John Burgess born about 1770 and died about 1858/9. John had son Thomas Burgess who is believed to have married Polly Kirby and they stayed in SC; William who married Martha Easterwood and moved to AL (my direct ancestor); and daughter Lucinda who married David Easterwood and moved to AL. I am trying to determine who the parents of this John Burgess. Any new clues or correspondence with other John Burgess descendants is appreciated. Pat Gilbert Email: patgilbfam@yahoo.com *************************************************** John BURGESS ESTATE: Source: Spartanburg SC Estate Papers # 637 from SC Archives: These early to mid 1859 documents show John died intestate; there were 4 named heirs: widow Sarah and William & Thomas BURGESS and David EASTERWOOD for wife Lucinda Burgess Easterwood. Sarah apparently was a second wife after death of first wife Caty. The four heirs share equally in the estate of John BURGESS. Each had $5918 distributive share. They shared in over 50 slaves. Each heir selected slaves, land, etc. and personal goods were sold at auction. One of the oldest slaves listed in the Slave Appraisal is named Hanah who went to Lucinda (via her husband David Easterwood)- the estate paid David to take care of her the rest of her life. When Thomas DRAPER, Sr. died his Will specifically left a slave Hannah to daughter Caty. I believe this is the same slave Hannah that is named in John Burgess' estate papers. Appraisers and Buyers of John BURGESS property included Davidson MITCHELL, Wm. T. KIRBY, James WOOD, Wm LITTLEJOHN, Wm and E. P. BROWN, Dr. F. LITTLEJOHN, ? HARVEY, Edward LIPCOMB. JOHN's WIVES: 1) Catherine DRAPER- From the 1964 Book "Draper Families in America" Thomas DRAPER Sr.'s August 1811 Will (Union District, SC) includes .." if my daughter Caty BURGESS see cause to keep Hannah and her children that she has in her possession at my death may be paying what they may amount in Value more than her part of my Estate." Per Suzanne Watt, a Daniel Draper descendant, in 1812 when they had a public sale of Thomas DRAPER Sr. personal effects, a John BURGESS was one of the purchasers. Jun 9, 1813 a final division of his estate included 10 shares- one share was for John BURGESS on behalf of "his wife Catherine Burgess." Catherine's brother Joshua DRAPER was one of the earliest settlers in Wellington, Benton Co. (now Calhoun Co.) AL i.e. to where several Burgess folks also migrate later. 2) Sarah UNKNOWN- I have nothing on John's second wife other than what is in the census below and that she was named as his widow when he died. JOHN BURGESS mentioned in letters from R.W. DRAPER to cousin Edwin DRAPER- Jacksonville, AL May 29, 1859 ( I have copies. Transcription by Suzanne Watt): "Where Grandfather Draper (My Note-Thomas Draper b. 1733 d 1811, father of my ancestors Joshua Draper b. 1784 and Catherine who m. John Burgess) was buried at in 12 miles of Unionville, the place you went to, while you was at Unionville, if you had of gone up to old uncle John Burgess which was only about 16 miles from where you was you would of got the necessary information no doubt that you was seaking for, as he was the oldest person in that county that was immediately connected with the Draper family, but he is now dead he died about the 1st of April last at or near Unionville he started to that place with a load of cotton and was taken on the road and died very sudden he was very old but was a remarkable stout man of his age he never had any sickness in his life. Aunt Catherine, his wife died a good while ago. She left 3 children - two sons and one daughter, the one daughter and one of the sons here in Pickins county, Ala, the other son lives in Spartanburg District So. Ca. He is able to give them 25 or 30 negros a piece from one old negro the one he got from Grandfather's estate." (My NOTE-the old negro he mentions is likely Hannah, who is noted in John Burgess's probate papers) Calhoun Co. AL May 30, 1860 "Uncle John Burgess had only three children one daughter and two sons they are all living two of them live in Pickens Co. AL and the other in South Carolina on the old place where he was raised" (My NOTE- Son Thomas stayed in SC and son William and daughter Lucinda moved to Pickens Co. AL) CENSUS: 1790- Union Co. SC Pg 90 BURGESS- John (only Burgess in Union Co. that year) 1 male 16 and over and 1 female 16 and over. This is the same county as Thomas DRAPER in 1790 (Catherine's father) 1810 Spartanburg Dist SC- BURGESS (near Richard KIRBY)- 01110-1001. This means John and wife Caty were 26-44 (born 1766-1784). Sons-one 10-15 (Wm b. 1798), one 16-25 (born 1785-1794-Thomas was born abt 1790 per 1850 census), daughter under age 10 (Lucinda b. 1805). 1820?? 1830- Spartanburg Co. SC Pg 313 (2 houses from Joshua DRAPER, Catherine's brother and Lovicey KIRBY) 1 m. 10-14 (b. 1816-1820) and 1 m. 50-59 (b. 1771-1780). This could be John but who is the young boy?? There are no females in the home so Catherine must have died before 1830. Next door neighbors are David REID and Stephen KIRBY. He owned 6 male slaves and 8 female slaves. 1840- Spartanburg Dist. SC. Pg 117: BURGES-John 1 male 20-29; 1 male 60-69. He has 20 slaves. 1850- Spartanburg Dist. SC Pg 232: BURGESS- John 81 b. VA $3000; Sarah 45, Mary 20, George 17, Vincent 14, Elizabeth 10 and Wm 6. The birthplace of Sarah and their children is not listed on the census. Their neighbors included GREEN, WILKINS, BROWN, VINESETT, LITTLEJOHN, REED and son Thomas BURGESS. Nearby is a Daniel and a M. (Marcus?) BURGESS which might be Thomas's sons. Marcus later shows up in Benton Co. (now Calhoun Co.) AL living next to my ancestor James KIRBY Notify Administrator about this message?
