This family has been connected genetically through the Burgess Surname DNA Project to the large family of Thomas Burgess Sr. of Orange and Pittsylvania Cos., Virginia. John Burgess is NOT the John Burgess who's the son of Timothy Burgess, Thomas Sr.'s oldest son. If the ages projected for Thomas Sr.'s two younger sons (Thomas Jr. and William) are correct (and they may not be), John can't be descended from them either--but none of these lines are very well delineated, and are certainly not complete as stated. It would only require an age adjustment of a few years to make John of Union Dist. a possible son of Thomas Burgess Jr.

See my schematic for these families at my site for the Burgess Surname DNA Project (www.millefleurs.tv, under the "Burgess Genealogy" link; you can also reach me through the site). We're starting to see a number of random connections being made between various branches of the larger Burgess lines. The results from this one test (from a descendant of William Burgess son of John of Union Dist., SC) also demonstrates that this family is NOT related to two other Burgess lines living in the same general area of South Carolina during the period prior to 1850. The Carolinas are difficult to research, as are the states lying directly to the west. DNA provides another tool for separating out these convoluted lines.

All best:

Prof. Michael Burgess
