William Burgess, born abt 1841 in New York

Just starting study on my mother's (Charline McNair Burgess) family. I need info on my grandfather Burgess's (Charles Wilson Burgess) father. All I know is William Burgess was born about 1841 in New York? and died in Garwin, Iowa in 1918. Married 2nd to Margaret J. Vest in 1897? where? Some where along the line, William was in Illinois, Leota county? where my grandfather, Charles, was born. I am having problems as I can't find Leota county. I am beginning to think the whole line on William is suspect. Please help!!
