Hi Lee, Your post caught my eye, so I decided to work on your problem for a few minutes. Using the 1880 census records on familysearch.org (free), I chose to search for William Burgess, b. NY c1841 and found the following record which matches most closely your other information: William BURGESS Self M Male W 38 NY Farmer NY NY Margaret J. BURGESS Wife M Female W 35 IN Keeping House IN IN Charles W. BURGESS Son S Male W 13 IL Farming NY IN Edwin G. BURGESS Son S Male W 11 IL Attending School NY IN John L. BURGESS Son S Male W 8 IA Attending School NY IN Lillie B. BURGESS Dau S Female W 5 NE Attending School NY IN Elwin BURGESS Son S Male W 3 IA NY IN Note that William's birth year is correct, he is married to Margaret, though much earlier than you had thought, and he has a son Charles W., b. IL. Since Charles' birth year would have been about 1867, this could be your grand-father's father. In any case, I suspect this is your ancestor, based on the information you have. Just looks like your informant might have been "off" on the dates and thus the generations. Just proves there's usually a nugget of truth in the information that's handed down - but maybe it's a little muddled. Good luck! Shirley Notify Administrator about this message?
