I believe that the Rachel Burgess who married Richard Thompson in Prince George's County, Maryland (see my posting on this forum from 2001) was the Rachel Burgess who was a daughter of Arnold and Martha (Maiden Name Unknown) Burgess of PG County. Thanks to Michael Marshall and his informative postings on rootsweb, I found the following.

http://worldconnect.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=mrmarsha&id=I53536

Name: Arnold Burgess
Birth: BEF 1729
Death: 14 DEC 1770 in Prince George's County, Maryland - Probate
Note:
===
BURGES, Arnold, Prince Georges Co. 7 Jul, 1770
14 Dec, 1770
To wife Martha, Ex.
Children: Lidia Tennely, Martha Dove, Mary, Sarah, Milicent, Eleanor, Rachel, William.
Wit: Nathaniel Newton, Samuel Lisby. 38. 287

There was a younger Arnold Burgess also in PG County, who appears in the 1790 and 1800 censuses, and was likely born about 1754. He was the son of James and Ann (Ball) Burgess, and is mentioned in the 1775 will of his maternal grandfather, Richard Ball (son of Hillary). After James Burgess' death in 1760, his widow/executrix married, about 1763, a Mr. Barrett and had three more children (also named in the Richard Ball will).

I believe that Arnold (the elder) was a brother of James, and thus the uncle of Arnold the younger). Some submissions to the Latter Day Saints database and to rootsweb try to make the two Arnolds father and son, but I am over 80 % certain they were uncle and nephew.

Returning to the family of Arnold the elder, as revealed in his will, I have reconstructed his family as follows.

1. ARNOLD3 BURGESS (JAMES2, FATHER1) was born Bet. 1720 - 1728 in Maryland?, and died December 14, 1770 in Prince George's County, Maryland. He married MARTHA Abt. 1746 in Maryland?. She was born Bet. 1722 - 1730 in Maryland?, and died Bet. 1770 - 1790 in Prince George's County, Maryland?.

Children of ARNOLD BURGESS and MARTHA are:

Notes for RICHARD THOMPSON:
In the 1820 census, Richard and Rachel Thompson were in "Bloomfield". Was this the area around the former village/burg of Bloomfield? Bloomfield's name was changed to Sharpsburg, and it is fairly close to both the Nicholas County and Montgomery County lines.

After some further checking, I believe that Arnold's and Martha's daughter "Lidia" (Lydia, I assume) married William Tennelly, son of Philip and Johanna/Joanna/Hannah (MNU) Tennelly, with Philip being the son of Philip and Grace (Thomas) Tennelly, all of PG County. See the 1790 and 1800 censuses for PG County.

After some further checking, I believe that Arnold's and Martha's daughter Martha married Richard Dove and, according to the 1790 and 1800 censuses for PG County, had many children, including an Isaac, who eventually moved to Muskingum County, Ohio.

After some further checking, I believe that Arnold's and Martha's son William is the same man as the William Burgess in the 1790 and 1800 censuses for PG County.

I interpret the will abstract above to mean that the other daughters were all still single as of 1770 (and so likely under the age of 20, therefore born between 1750 and 1762). I am specifically estimating that Rachel Burgess was born in 1762.

I believe that Richard and Rachel (Burgess) Thompson resided in Maryland for a few years following their marriage (their son Horation, born in 1783, reported in the Kentucky census (1850 or 1860, I cannot remember) that he was born in Maryland), but then moved, circa 1784, to Loudoun County, Virginia, and eventually to the area of Bath and/or Montgomery County, KY.

Some researchers have speculated that Martha, wife of Arnold Burgess the elder, might have been born a Ball (another daughter of Richard Ball who died in 1775). I do not see any evidence to suggest this conclusion. Does anyone know what Martha's maiden name might have been?

I also believe that Arnold Burgess the elder was the son of James and Jane (MNU) Burgess of Charles County (and PG County), and that this James was born before 1691 (he was an adult by 1712, and mentioned in a transaction). I would also speculate that this elder James could be the brother of the Benjamin Burgess who died in Charles County, MD in 1742.

If anyone is researching the Arnold Burgess family, or might have a connection to any of the Burgesses in Arnold's will, please contact me directly at duaneaboggs@hotmail.com to share further data and ideas.
