Thos Burgess (1602/03-) of Sandwich, MA, John or Che & G. of Conway, NC

Although widely reported on the Internet, The parents of Thomas Burgess of Sandwich were NOT Thos B. and Eliz Pye of Truro, Cornwall. That family did have a son Thomas, but he was b. AFT 1620. Other birthplaces have been proposed, including Northamptonshire and Yorkshire, where a Thos. B. m. a Dorothy (as did the Sandwich Thos.). Thos. & Dor. of York, however, had no children. We need to look elsewhere for Thos.'s parentage and place of birth; and a DNA study, including participants from Thos.'s descendants and others from England of a similar DNA to Thomas would be of great help.

Fortunately, enough DNA samples from the various Burgess lines are available on Ysearch, to draw some preliminary conclusions. I have posted these on my website at

http://www.pcez.com/~bigshoe/du/Pery/brewster.html#9540

If you cannot access this page because of later revisions to my website, you can access the index at

Descendants of Thomas have contributed the results of their yDNA analyses to Ysearch, and I have posted what was apparently Thomas's DNA. It bears no resemblance to Burgesses from other parts of England (including Cornwall), but shows a marked resemblance to the sample of a man descended from John Burgess b. 8 Feb. 1817 in Tabley, Cheshire, England. That DNA, in turn, is not too different from that of a descendant of George Washington Burgess b. 3 July 1822 of Conway, Northampton, NC. The haplogroups of Thos and John were tested to be R1b1b2, and that of George was tested at R1b (the parent group of R1b1b2 -- which may indicate that all three samples are of the same haplogroup).

Equipped with this new information, I sought through the IGI to find a Thomas Burgess b. at the appropriate time, and came up with:

Thomas Burgess
c. 2 Oct. 1602 Wilmslow, Cheshire, England

Wilmslow is 8 mi. E of Knutsford, and Tabley is 3 mi. W of Knutsford, so there is a high likelihood that Thos. of Wilmslow is related to John of Tabley. The father of T. of W. was John Burgess, b. ABT 1565 prob. Cheshire. His other children were:

1. Ann Burges
c. 10 Mar. 1583 Wilmslow

2. Francis Burges (M)
c. 19 Feb. 1585 W.

3. Jone Burgess
c. 10 Mar. 1587 W.

4. Raphe/Ralph Burges/Burgis
c. 13 Oct. 1590 W.

5. Anne Burgess (again)
c. 13 Oct. 1592 W.

6. Jeffrey Burgess
c. 24 Jan. 1593/94 W. poss. m. Jane Davis

7. Edmnd. Burges
c. 8 Dec. 1594 W.

8. Eliz. Burges
c. 20 Jan. 1595/96 W.

9. Ed. Burgess (again)
c. 16 Oct. 1598 W.

10. Kath. Burges
c. 11 Feb. 1601 W.

11. Thos. Burges/Burgis
(see above)

Of course, these may have been children of more than one John; but they are space sufficiently from one another to have all come from the same family.

The DNA matches are not remarkable, but signeificant. Thomas of Sandwich differs from from John of Tabley at:

DYS 391 (10 vs. 11)
DYS 458 (17 vs. 14)
DYS 464b (15 vs. 16)
DYS 464c (16 vs. 17)

John of Tabley, in turn, differs from George W. of Conway at:

DYS 385a (11 vs. 12)
DYS 458 (14 vs. 17)
DYA 447 (25 vs. 24)
DYS 449 (31 vs. 30)

I welcome input from the readers on the above. Please post here AND email me at bigshoe@pcez.com.

Michael :-)
