Hi Donald!
I know this is a late date to post a response to your query, but I have a Stephen Merritt (b. 4-1845) who married Sarah (....) (b. 9-1857).Sarah and Stephen had 13 children, per the 1900 census, with only 12 living.They listed the following children:John M (b. 9-1872); Martha; Mary (b. 11-1874); George (b. 10-1877); Charles Robert (b. 2-1883); Harriet E. (b. 3-1885); Annie M. (b. 6-1887); James M. (b. 11-1890); Kate (b. 4-1894); Lennie G. (b. 2-1894); Emmie G. (b. 10-1896). That was a conglomeration of the census results from 1870 - 1910 for that one family.In 1880 and 1900, for instance, they were listed as living in Marion Twp. #1 in McDowell County, NC.
That's all I have on this family going "forward" (i.e., no further information on children).I was concentrating on my own direct line of Burgins.
Going "backwards", he is probably a son of John Mann Burgin (b. 7-26-1817) and Mary M. Haney (b. 10-1818).They had the following children:Rebecca J.; Charles R.; Stephen Merritt; Mary S.; John C.; Robert (b. 9-1864) who probably married Selumna (---) (b.10-1865); and Eliza.
John Mann Burgin is probably a son of Merritt Burgin (b. July 10, 1784) and his wife, Mary Ann Patton (b. January 9, 1778).Their children were E. Patton (b. November 3, 1808, moved to Arkansas or Missouri) and married Pauline (---); Rebecca (b. March 18, 1810) who married Henry Garden; Ben (b. November 18, 1812 and moved to Colorado); James (b. September 10, 1814 and moved to Tennessee); James Mann (b. July 26, 1818; Robert C. (b. December 20, 1819, a retail merchant) who married March 25, 1844 to Henrietta Moore; andMerritt (b. March 12, 1821), a merchant, who married (1) Martha M. Carson (married July 25, 1854) (2) Mary E. Smith (b. SC, married Rutherford Co. October 24, 1866).
Merritt is probably the son of John Burgin (b. October 15, 1774, d. June 22, 1837) and wife Elizabeth Mann (b. 1778).John is buried at the Campground Cemetery near Lackey Town and Old Fort.
John is probably a son of Benjamin Burgin (b. Kent Co., MD, December 25, 1742, d. April 15, 1823) who married Leah Mann (b. ca. 1754, d. Aug 9, 1837).The marriage bond between Benjamin Burgin and Leah Mann is dated November 18, 1772.It didn't say when the wedding actually took place.
(My line is through another son of Benjamin and Leah Burgin.)
Also, according to the marriage index of McDowell County, Stephen Merritt Burgin married Sally Godfrey in Marion, McDowell Co., NC, on October 6, 1871, by W. F. Craig, JP. The groom was the son of John Burgin and _____, and the bride was the daughter of ________ and Anny Godfrey.
I keep saying "probably" because so much of genealogy is ones own assumptions. In this case, however, I "probably" have it right. The census reports had this information, and the marriage index bears it out.
Can you fill in any blanks for me?
You probably already have this information, but ...
