Notes for Phebe Margaret Burhans
"I have now to tell you that I visited Uncle Henry last week and find them all well except Phebes babe which I did not think would live from one hour to an other, but when I left I think it was gaining a little. She and Henry are both coming out this sumer if nothing happens more than I know of now, Henry will come with McAlvard and if possible Phebe will go with him too, Henry is verry anxious to go and so is Phebe."
Letter to sister Mary Wood Burhans Roberts from Kelly E. Burhans, dated 26 Oct 1832, Paducah, KY. [6]
"I am now to lay a heavy charge upon you.Mr. Roberts and John to which if you plead guilty I shall never feel justified to forgive you, God grant, that you may refute it to my satisfaction. It is this:I took much pains to see Mr. Brown and to brand him with the name of an inhumane wretch of man of no principle etc. etc., "Why, said he‚ "for the completion of an attempt to defame the good character of my sister; "Said he you are misinformed; upon the honor of man, I will give you a true history of the case, which is briefly this, when I arrived at Roberts; I found that most of the family were opposed to Phebe particularly Abrose and the old lady she was abused and illy treated etc etc and it was through the advice of Mr. Roberts John and Mary that I consented to make a wife of her and Mary allowed me to lodge with her before the time of mariage in her house, they are more to blame than I am, I took no advantage, they all knew my situation etc etc; that upon the honor of man is true, and much more if nescessary. What appears strange to me that you never mentioned on syable in either of your letters, excpet the last since the last transaction. It is shadowed with suspicions and doublts; in your nextI want the particulars and facts. He tells me further that there is a great deal of dissention among the family; dissatisfaction between John and Abrose and the old lady; which I deeply regret, that of quite a serious nature.I thought that peace and tranquillity, unanimity of interest would always prevail with you; and I pray if there has anything like the above arisen, that it may speedily be extinguished;for God's sake be united tell Abrose and John it is the wish of one, that loves their interest and happiness dearly that they should be united and that peace and harmony should be their motto; forever. It grieves me sorely;I would rather hear death hell murder, form any other quarter, than to hear of a division of opinion with them, to the extent stated. No, never!let it be said ruffled form of enmity and hatred has found its way into the peaceful harmonies and affectionate family of Daniel Roberts.Your letter does not amount to much, with the exception of the account of your crops, which is very satisfactory:your crops I think are quite large much more so than I expected. How long would it have taken to have infomed me whether Phebe was alive and if alive, well etc; that you have left as generally do for me to guess, be a little more minute if convenient."
Letter to Mary Wood Burhans Roberts (wife of John Montgomery Roberts, daughter-in-law of Daniel and Polly Phelps Roberts, sister-in-law to Ambrose Roberts) from her brother Kelly E. Burhans dated 30 Jan 1835, Albany, NY [6]
"Tell Margaret that I am her sister. She seems to have forgotten that we are here or care for her.I should be very happy to receive a letter from her.I hope her little boy and yours will always be as fine as they are now.I do not believe syllable of what Kelly has been writing, nor would I though yourself told me.I cannot believe my sister guilty of such conduct as she is said to be.My time and room are all occupied so goodbye.Write soon.Eliza"
