I found your information very interesting. My ancestor spelled his name Burckhart, and I have never run across it spelled that way, nor have I ever heard an explanation before. His name was George Peter Burckhart, and he came to New Orleans in the mid-19th c. as a middle-aged man. I have copies of several legal documents with his signature, which very clearly spells "Burckhart." If it were not for these documents I would've thought it was a misspelling. Thanks for the info!
