Hey Tracye,
I believe I may have a smidgen of info on your Samuel Burks, Sr.
I am directly related to (I believe) his brother Richard Burks.Richard was born Jan 20, 1783 in Washington County Kentucky.Their father (also Richard) was born in Scotland in 1750, and died in Washington County in 1820/30. Apparently, there was Samuel, Charles, Richard and Mary (who was also married to a King by the way). There may have been others, I'm not sure.
Apparently Charles did very well for himself, owning several hundred acres in Washington and Marion counties. It appears he never married. In 1805 (give or take) Charles built a water-powered grist mill, and quickly added a distillery. It flourished until he died in 1831.I found a copy of his will at the Filson Club.Samuel was his executor, and inherited very well on the condition that he return home to care for their mother until her death. I would love any other info you might have.Where did your Samuel die?
These Burks were part of the Maryland Catholics. They settled Burks Springs (on the Marion/Washington county line) in the late 1700's.
An interesting sidebar to all of this is...if this is your Samuel, he inherited the distillery that would later become Maker's Mark...
Cheers,
Bj
