Burnes Family -Monticello (Jasper Co) GA

Elizabeth Ann Burnes, b. 13 June 1840, married (1st) Brittain (Britton?) LaFayette Cheek, b. 1841. They were married on 2 Sep 1857. Because they were so young when they married, they lived with LaFayette's parents, William and Temperance (Tempe) Cheek in Jasper Co. GA.

LaFayette Cheek had two children by Elizabeth Ann Burnes Cheek. They were Thaddeus Jackson Cheek, b.1858, and Sarah Frances (Fanny) Cheek, b. 1861.

Lafayette Cheek fought for the CSA (B. Co., 44th GA Regiment, VA volunteers) and died on 26 June 1862 in the Battle of Ellison's (Ellerson's or Ellyson's) Mill, which was also called the Battle of Beaver Dam Creek, which was part of the "Seven Days' Campaign."

Elizabeth Ann continued living with Lafayette's parents for a while, later moving away to be the house keeper for a Mr. Fields. She subsequently had two more children, Lucy Cheek, b. 1864, and Henry T. (Buck) Cheek, b. Mar/Apr 1870. Did Elizabeth Ann marry another of the Cheek sons who may have fathered these two children? It is presumed that these were really the children of a Mr. Fields, for whom she served as house keeper and whom she eventually married. Who was this Mr. Fields? Where was he from? Are there any records of the marriage? Any other records of Elizabeth Ann? She is on the census records in Jasper Co. until her death on 20 Oct 1900. (Her age varies dramatically from census to census...)

Elizabeth Ann Burnes Cheek Fields was buried in Talmadge Methodist Church cemetary. Her marker was a simple cement rectangle with EAF on it. It is located at the foot of her eldest son Thaddeus Jackson Cheek's grave.

I have information about the family of Thaddeus Jackson Cheek, but have almost no info on any of the other children of Elizabeth Ann. I am also eager to get more info on other Burnes relatives.

On 23 Dec 1857, a William J. Burnes married Rebecca Ann Cheek, b. 1834 or 1835, who was Brittain (Britton?) LaFayette Cheek's sister. Was William J. Burnes the brother, or possibly the father, of Elizabeth Ann Burnes? Did they have children? Who were the parents of Elizabeth Ann and/or William J. Burnes? Where were they from?

Any one with information on the Burnes family or the Cheek relatives of the Burnes families please e-mail me and/or post here.
