Do you have any information on the posting left by Chan Burns (message no. 13)?

He wrote: "I am interested in finding out about William Mat Burns and son, William Mat Burns from Greenville District, S.C. They left for Mississippi with brother/cousin John William Burns(Burnes) about 1867. John and wife, Mary, came to Mississippi about 1848. William Sr. wife was Elizabeth. Both were part-Cherokee."

I wonder if the John William Burnes and wife Mary were my ancestors. I am looking for the family of John William Burnes (b. Bet. 1821 - 1823, probably in Greenville County, South Carolina, died in Marietta, GA in a Civil War hospital) and his wife Mary Polly Smith or Bull (depending on to whom you speak). They moved to Attala County, Mississippi around 1846-1847. I am descended from their daughter Mary Ellender "Ellen" Burns who married Rolan Tanksley in Winston County, Mississippi.

Like your husband and children, I have been told all of my life that Ellen Burns Tanksley was "full-blood Cherokee". I seriously doubt the full-blood part, but I am curious to find more information about the Cherokee part. Can you help me, or do you know someone who might be able to?

Does anyone out there have a current address for Chan Burns?

Best regards,
Mary K. Johnson
