Not satisfied to leave well enough alone, I've looked at this family some more in Georgia. Let me say first off that you know you're dealing with an obscure family when you're on the Burnett Genformum page with about 10,000 messages posted & when you do a search for "Elbert Co.,GA" you don't get a single hit. That might be your 1st clue that maybe this is NOT the apparently much sought-after family of Jeremiah Burnett of Edgefield, SC to Talapoosa, AL. Further, it appears that this SC/AL Jeremiah is in Alabama by or before 1850, whereas it appears to me that the Jeremiah that I see as the father of Reason Allen Burnett, Sr, never left Elbert Co. & in all liklihood is buried in the Elberton area. He is definitely on the 1850 Elbert census, w/son John on adjoining census page, virtually the same as they appeared on the 1840 census. But I will leave that for others to argue. I will simply present you with the results of the evidence & let you decide. In order to do that, I'm constructing a hypothetical family which I believe to be largely correct, but I may have added someone wrong & almost certainly have omitted people. Jeremiah Burnett b abt 1775 SC, d aft 1850 GA? is on the 1840 Elbert Co.,GA census, accompanied on this census page by at least 3 other families, all in consecutive order, that make an unquestionable family unit. These other 3 families are sons Reason Burnnet Sr, John Burnett b abt 1812 SC, & son-in-law John McGarity, b abt 1803. These families appear near the top of the census page & near the bottom of the previous page is Pleasant Burnett b betw 1800-1810. It seems most probable that he is also part of this family. I have supplemented this data with female marriages of that period in Elbert Co. to supply Jeremiah with "lost daughters". Thus, my family appears as follows: Jeremiah Burnett abt 1775 SC, d aft 1850 GA. Wife: S. abt 1780 SC, d aft 1850 GA Children: Bethana Burnett abt 1803 SC, d aft 1860 Yalobusha Co., MS. Mary Anna Burnett abt 1805 SC, d 1862 Hart Co.,GA. Pleasant Burnett betw 1800-1810 SC Reason Allen Burnett, Sr. abt 1810 SC, d 1880 KY John Burnett abt 1812 SC, d aft 1860 Sarah Burnett abt 1822 GA/SC, d 1880 Hardeman Co.,TN Two other possible sons of Jeremiah would be: Westley Burnett, abt 1820 GA Alfred S. Burnett, abt 1818. I won't speculate further about them at this time. Bethana m. Nov 18, 1824 Elbert Co. to James Sartain abt 1801 GA, d aft 1860 Yalobusha Co.,MS, where they appear on the 1850 & 1860 census. I see proponants of Jeremiah of SC/AL trying to kill his daughter Bethenia abt 1846. If you wish to do so, that's another reason you are a different family. I believe James Sartain was a brother of Elisha Sartain, to be mentioned later here. Mary Anna Burnett m. Oct 14, 1824 Elbert Co. to John McGarity, abt 1803 Elbert Co., d 1893 Hart Co.,GA. Pleasant Burnett m. Oct 13, 1831 Elbert Co. to Martha Henry, abt 1811 Elbert Co. I haven't been able to locate them yet. Reason Allen Burnett, Sr. was the subject of Part 1 of this post. John Burnett m. Feb 8, 1838 Elbert Co. to Elizabeth McGarity, abt 1812 GA, d aft 1860 I think Elizabeth was probably a sister of John McGarity who m. Mary Anna Burnett. Sarah Burnett m. Dec 17, 1840 Elbert Co. to Calvin Sartain, abt 1822 GA, d aft 1880 Hardeman Co.,TN. There is a belief that Calvin is likely the son of Elisha Sartain & Frances Bonds. I have children, etc. for many of these, but leave them off for now, as that's not my main objective here. Michael McKinney mckinneympm@yahoo.com Notify Administrator about this message?
