Lisa, your grandfather, Claude Howard BURNETT (sic), was a son of John Edward BURNETT (born in the Grandview Community, Madison Co., NC, 4 July, 1902) & Lucile MOORE. My records indicate that they lived near Fredericksburg, VA. There is a tombstone for John Edward BURNETT in the Grandview Baptist Church Cemetery, in Madison Co., NC, but I don't believe that he is buried there:

John Edward & Lucille had two sons, Hilliardand Claude Howard (your grandfather). Hilliard had a son, David CLARKE, by Lula CLARKE. Hilliard later married Margaret Ward, and they had no children.
My notes on your grandfather indicate that he had two children in France before he married your grandmother, Norma Jean (sic) BLACKMON, of Marion, NC. They had one child, Claude Howard, Jr. (your dad), born in 1948. Your grandfather married 2nd, Lucille ALLMAN, a daughter of Wilburn ALLMAN & Pansy McGALLIARD. Lucille's granfathers were John ALLMAN, of Alexander, NC, and Joe McGALLIARD. My notes also indicate that your grandfather had two sons and three daughters in Germany, but I don't know the time frame of those births.

Your great grandfather, John Edward BURNETT, was the youngest of 14 children of Elias Wheeler BURNETT & Sevina Elizabeth BALLEW. My first wife (and mother of my oldest two children) was a granddaughter of Cornelius McLoud (Mac) BURNETT (the oldest of the 14 children) and Daisy Belzora McDARIS. Mac BURNETT was the first Democrat sheriff of Madison Co., NC, after Reconstruction.

I can give you your BURNETT, BELCHER, BALLEW, and STAGGS ancestries. They are all lines from Greenville & Spartanburg Cos., SC.
The trailing "e" has, unfortunately, found its way into several of the South Carolina BURNETT families, but the proper spelling is, indeed, BURNETT, and your SC remnant cousins pronounce the name, "BURNIT". The immigrant, John BURNETT, was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, 25 December, 1610. He married Lucretia JOHNSON and settled in Old Rappahannock Co., VA.
