Cora Lee Burnette Cook from Augusta, GA and Landis, NC
I have hit a brick wall and I hope that someone out there can help me figure out how to find Cora Lee Burnette(Burnett/Barnett(e) Cook's family. I have tried every which way to spell her first and last name. (I am aware that a great fire wiped out the 1890 census reports won't have any luck there.)
She was born in Augusta, GA on 12/27/1888 and supposedly she had a twin brother (name unknown at this time.)Apparently, her family succumbed to the scarlet fever epidemic and only she and her twin survived out of the family (they were 12 at the time.) They traveled from GA to NC working in cotton mills and living in boarding houses.
Cora married my great-grandfather Alvin E. Cook in Iredell Co., NC around 1918 (and I no idea whatever happened to her twin brother.)
She never really talked about her family to her children, either because it saddened her to think about their deaths or it bothered her to remember the past, in general. I also wonder if Burnette is her real last name or if it is the last name of the family that eventually took her in.
