Thomas Butler b. 1720, d. 1784 VA
I am searching for two important pieces of this puzzle. Thomas Butler b. 1720, Surrey County, VA (later became Sussex County) and died in Sussex County, was supposedly an officer in the Revolutionary War but I can find no records of this. Family stories tell of his fighting a duel with his future son-in-law Lewis Lanier. I'm beginning to think this is made up. Does anyone have any proof he was a Revolutionary Patriot?
I also have no proof of who his parents were, and ancestry trees have a number of conflicting names. Does anyone know who Thomas's parents were?
I have the list of his 4 wives and 11 children. I have his will and inventory and he was a relatively wealthy man. One would think there would be more known about him.
Any help will be appreciated.
