Simms camp is located approx 20 East of Crescent City on Hwy 199 just before Gasquet. It's not what it use to be. Not much of the original buildings. A mobil home park in still there. A few out buildings also. It's right on the banks of the Smith River. Don't know of too much history there since I lived in the county 1967 to 1993. Just a transient type place. Some gold dredging was done in the early 80's by sports miners there and I saw one nugget the size of a golf ball taken out of the river at Simms Camp. I personally dredged for gold just above Simms Camp pulling a few ounces of placer gold out.
I remember Antlers Cafe and Bar also quite well I believe the street was "I" street between Front and "2nd" St. The antlers bar was the wild spot in Crescent City for many years, with many drunken brawls. It had the reputation of being a bad place to go unless you wanted to get drunk and fight. I've been in the place many times in response to fights, knifings and such. It was a wild and crazy place where the fishermen and loggers would go. I don't recall any pictures of the resturant and bar but maybe someone in the police department might have some crime scene pictures they might want to share. There was a lot of crime there.
