Lorraine Phyllis Weir "Larry" Benidt

Benidt, Lorraine Phyllis "Larry" Weir Age 91, of Edina and Eden Prairie, died Wednesday, March 19, after 10 years of living with Alzheimer's disease. Her family recognizes and appreciates the skilled, loving care of longtime assistant Kathleen Larson, of the staff of The Colony in Eden Prairie and of Hospice of the Twin Cities. Born January 5, 1917, in Moorhead, Minnesota, she was raised in Fargo, North Dakota. Lorraine was a lifelong music lover, playing piano and violin from grade school on. She played in the Fargo Moorhead Symphony in high school and college, directed a senior citizens choir in South Minneapolis as a volunteer for 22 years, was a longtime member of WAMSO and a benefactor of the Minnesota Orchestra. She graduated from North Dakota State University in 1938, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She was a life member of the Thursday Musical and a life member of the Courage Center Auxiliary. She taught high school in Madelia, Minnesota, in the late 1930s and married husband Maurice "Mike" Benidt in October of 1940. They were members of St. John's Lutheran Church in South Minneapolis for 37 years, and then of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Minneapolis. She and Mike traveled extensively, including to Europe, where they lived in London with their three sons for seven months in 1952, and to Latin America and across the United States. Lorraine was married to Mike Benidt, longtime executive of General Mills, for 55 years, until his death in 1995. They raised three sons, all of whom survive: David of Bloomington (Joellen), Michael of Broomfield, Colorado (Sheryl Kay), and Bruce of Minneapolis (Lisa Dewey Joycechild). She is survived by grandchildren Emily Benidt Wakefield, of Albert Lea; Meredith Benidt, of St. Paul; Matthew Benidt, of Phoenix; and Heather Benidt, of Louisville, Colorado. Memorials are preferred to North Dakota State University Development Foundation for the Benidt- Weir Scholarship, PO Box 5144, Fargo, ND 58105, (701) 231-6800. Services will be 2 PM Saturday, March 22 at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 4801 France Ave. S, Minneapolis.
