Hi Melody,
I'm not related, just like to help out where I can.

I can sure see the problem with the spelling of the surname! How confusing. That census you mentioned was the 1900? as Chaboya. 1880 they were in Santa Barbara Co as Chavoya. 1860 Alex at home with parents (Pedro and Gertrude) and siblings (8 listed) in Santa Clara Co as Chabolla/Chavolla.
Even alex's wife Magdaline last name is found 3 ways
Gulnac (from Lawrences bio)
Golnac - CADI Ray Chavoya (poss Paul on 1900)
Goulnac - CADI Emelia Malarin (Emily on 1900)

Found some deaths as Chavoya

found death of Alejandro and youngest son, Alex died within 3 week of each other in 1903

found a bio for Lawrence/Lorenzo P. Chavoya
http://www.cagenweb.com/monterey/biochavoyalp.html
gives his childrens names:
Mearle Lester Chavoya
Harold Joseph "
Maria "

Mearle and Harold are found in general search of Ancestry (if you have sub... if not let me know, I will lookup)

Mearle married Jessie Hansen only one son that I can find
Eugene Mearle b. 8 Nov 1926 may still be living in Monterey.
Eugene married Marlene Wasson (Div 1973) obit for Marlene (2007) mentions two daughters, Kimberly deceased, Allison b. 1958

Harold married Mary? can't find any children as I haven't discovered her maiden name. Mary Chavoya d. 1972 Monterey Co

The newspapers that referred to the killing of Leonardo Chavoya in 1889 Monterey Co .. Alex younger brother.

As for Maxwell and Gonzales visiting cousins Chaboya... best guess is a couple of Alex's or magdelina's sisters.... and that is a whole lot of family to chase down.

best of luck, hope I contributed somethings you didn't already have.
Judy
