My GGGrandfather sailed from Sedgwick, Maine to California and settled in Humboldt County in northern CA. His younger brother, Henry Byard, joined him at some point and lived with George and his family for awhile (1870 Census) but never married. There's a reason why Henry never married which is why I'm writing this query. Ten years later, in the 1880 census in Humboldt County, Josephine Flye, "married" and born in Maine in January, 1840, was living with Henry. She called herself the housekeeper. And in census-after-census, there was Josephine Flye, "married" and keeping house for bachelor Henry. In the 1910 census, Josephine was about 70 years old, still fixing breakfast and dinner for Henry but by 1920, she'd passed on, it seems. I'd given up finding her husband, Mr. Flye, but came across a census in 1870 in San Francisco at a boarding house where three of the seven boarders were from Maine, two of them were "Rewben" Fly, age 38, and his wife, Josephine, age 31, who was keeping house. Reuben, who worked in a wood and coal yard, estimated his real estate at $1,500. I think Reuben's wife, Josephine, is the lady who decided she enjoyed keeping Henry's house clean. If you get my drift. Does anyone know who this couple from Maine would have been? Henry was born and raised for a long time in Sedgwick, Hancock, Maine and he and Reuben may have known each other back home, although I can't find Reuben in any of my searches. Maybe "Reuben" was his middle name? Thank you for any help you can send my way. Jan (Byard) Saremi Notify Administrator about this message?
