John descends through Charlie Amos. "Dit" in French means say, called, or perhaps even alias,AKA,etc. I found several sites explaining it by simply putting Dit names for French in www.askjeeves.com
I chose Genealogy Acadian & French-Canadian style at http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/wjones/dit.htm I'm still working on why some things give the appearnce of being very intentional, for instance Laviole for Laviolette, connection to Roufiange, Charboneau,& other surnames, records inCahokia, Ste. Genevieve & Vincennes which children were born to his wife of 1789 and which to Lucille buried as Cabacie. I'm trying to post on Washington County, MO site as several there with questions that I would like to contact, but have not been able to verify my password. Indications are that Mary Archange Napoloen Cabassier was born in Ste. Genevieve, Mo about 1817 and married about 1838. Were the children of the second wife? born Hamelin and go by Emily or is it visa versa??? So many questions
