I found this obituary in the scrapbook of my great grandmother, Sarah Kathrine Davis Keys of Knox County, Illinois. It was probably posted in The Republican-Register.
CABBAGE, CHRISTOPHER (Aug 2, 1824 – Nov 10, 1907)
DEATH OF MR. CABBAGE.
Christopher Cabbage was born in Tennessee, Aug. 2, 1824, and died at his home in this city Sunday afternoon, Nov. 10, 1907, aged eighty-three years, three months and eight days. In early manhood he moved to Burlington, Ia., and on August 30, 1841, was united in marriage to Miss Susannah Irwin. Three children were born to them, all of whom died in infancy or early childhood. The wife died on March 17, 1863. On April 30, 1865, he was again married to Ms. Lucetia Young, the widowed daughter of the late Rev. L.B. Dennis. Mr. and Mrs. Cabbage came to this city in 1867. The deceased united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church in early manhood and was the first of his father’s family to become a Christian.
Many years ago Mr. Cabbage transferred his membership to the Methodist church. During the time he was in the Presbyterian church he held office of deacon and at the Methodist church was a steward and class leader. He was a faithful and consistent Christian and until age and strength failed him was ever ready and willing to take his part in the services. The funeral services were held from the residence on Broad street yesterday afternoon at two o’clock and at two thirty at the Methodist church. Both services were conducted by the Rev. William Watson. At the church he was assisted by the Rev. N.G. Clark and Rev. R.T. Ballew. Mr. Watson spoke in an impressive manner about the life of the deceased and made touching references to the long and useful career of Mr. Cabbage. He based his remarks on the 90th Psalm.
The singing was by Misses Bessie Conner and Fay Frazier with Miss Lena Asquith as accompanist and the selections were “Asleep in Jesue,” “Nearer My Good to Thee,“ and “Rock of Ages.” On the basket (casket) were several sprays of beautiful flowers.
A large company of sympathizing neighbors and friends gathered at the church to pay their last respects to the departed one. The pallbearers were J.W. Tate, Hugh Patton, T.B. Tate, Ed McElwain, George Huggins, Thomas Woodmansee. Interment was made in the Knoxville cemetery.
