I recently visited Woodstock in Frederick Co., VA. This village was originally called Millerstown or Muellerstadt. From this village, Adam Cabbage (Apr. 1755 - Mar 17, 1844), enlisted 1776-1777, as a Pvt. with Capt. Jonathon Clark & Col. Peter Muhlenberg’s, VA line. He was discharged after two years at Valley Forge. At the time of enlistment, he lived at Millerstown, Shenandoah Co., VA. He had been born in Chester Co., PA. He served in the Rev War, (S-2111 Pension Certif. 31 009, filed at Reeds, VA). Adam was married in 1783-1784,to Rebecca (1759 - 1801 or 1844), after moving to TN.
Adam’s brother John Cabbage (Feb. 24, 1758 – Jan. 8, 1852) also enlisted from Millerstown in June 1781 but served as Pvt. in Col. Bird's Reg., Capt. Marshal's Co. In Nov. 1781 he served 3 months under Capt. Crookshank. After 1782 he served two months guard duty, at Winchester Barracks, in Capt. Netherland’s Co. (Rev. War, Reeds, VA, Pension S3134). John, in 1786, married Catherine M., after moving to Sullivan, TN.
In nearby Harrisonburg, Rockingham, VA., at the Eastern Mennonite University Historical Library, I made a quick examination of records for the following names (Cabbage, Cabis, Cappes, Capish, Kabbis, Kappess, Cubbage, Cabage, & Coppess) and found no further records of an Adam or John Cabbage.
I did find a reference to a George Cabbage as an early settler. Historians of the area do say that they have heard of the Cabbage name. I believe more time spent with the resources of the EMU Library might bear some fruit.
I am not certain of Adam's and John's father’s name. The best possibility is Heinrich Kabbis, and their mother might have been Anna Maria, both born about 1730, probably in Germany, and living in Chester Co., PA at the time of their sons' birth. The evidence is thin, based on a now unknown prayer book that seemed to have belonged to Heinrich, showing sons named Adam and John.
I hope this stimulates new research about the parents of Adam and John.
