Eldon, you and I have exchanged a few messages previously on this forum, and I'm hoping you might do me what I hope are only a few small favors.
Can you tell me what document or documents list the heirs of Adam, giving the reference to what record book and page, or what file in the county records, this document is recorded or filed in.I received a query from a rep of the SAR, who was working on a membership application for a descendant of my dad's grandfather, James Willis Cabbage, great-grandson of John, the RW soldier. The application foundered for lack of evidence connecting James Willis Cabbage's father, Rev. John Cabbage, to his father, and Alexander Cabbage, to his father, John the RW soldier. The evidence that I gave for the connection of Rev. John to Alexander appears to be acceptable, and he thinks that a case can be built for Alexander to John that MIGHT be acceptable for SAR/DAR membership for descendants of John, other than through his proven daughters, Phoebe and Elizabeth.Establishing who Adam's children were helps rule him out as a possible parent of John's children, strengthening the case for John as their father in the absence of other records.
Going back through some of my files, I think that there's a bit more proof on this than most of us realized.A. M. Coppage printed in one of his books a transcript of a letter of one James Cabbage, written in 1948, in which this James said that his father, Jonathan Cabbage, was a cousin of Arnold Cabbage, son of Alexander. Apparently, this Jonathan was a son of John, son of Adam- he appears with John in Parke Co., IN, in 1850 and 1860, and almost next door to Arnold's sister in Clay Co., IN, in 1870.
I ask you about this information concerning Adam's heirs, because, although I know I have some information on this, I've misplaced it- I know who Adam's children are, but I need to know the legal document that establishes it.
I had asked the SAR rep whether DNA evidence was ever accepted in establishing lines, and he said that it was, when necessary to establish a preponderance of the evidence. No one has mentioned this on this forum, to date, and perhaps it should be.Particularly in the case of John's proposed daughters, a mitochondrial DNA test of a woman descended through an all female line of descent from any of the proposed but unproven daughters would be very convincing evidence that these lines are correct, if it matched an all-female line from one of the proven daughters.
The y-DNA test for an all-male line from John the RW soldier, such as mine, compared to the same test for a male line descendant of Adam would also be convicing- a match to John's proposed male-line descendants would almost have to be credited to John, there being no other Cabbages in sight in TN, particularly considering that I believe all of the children are shown by the census to have been born in TN.
I have also been wanting to ask you this for a long time- you have mentioned names for the wives of the soldiers, Adam and John, and I'm wondering where you got them.If from deeds, or whatever, you would be doing all of us a great favor if you posted that information with particulars on this forum.
