I have no connection to this family, but am posting this in hopes it will help someone. This was found in a newspaper, The Metropolis Planet, October 16, 2002, Metropolis, Massac Co., IL. It was found on page 3 in a section entitled, "Yesterday's News", as follows: 70 Years Ago, Republican Herald, Oct. 19, 1932 - Samuel L. Wells, 92, a veteran of the Civil War, died at his home, 106 West 9th Street, last Thursday afternoon. Funeral services were held at the home on Sunday afternoon, the 16th. Owing to some relatives not being able to arrive in time, burial was postponed until the next afternoon, when it took place at the Masonic Cemetery. Mr. Wells was born in Indiana and was one of the first to enlist in Co. D 22nd Regiment, 120th Indiana Volunteers. He was married in April 1871 to Harriett Cable and they for 47 years resided in the house on West 9th Street. To this union were born one son and four daughters; the couple also adopted a niece. One daughter preceded him in death. Mr. Wells held elected and appointed offices in Massac County for 35 years. He was a member of the M.E. Church. Good Luck.
