I am the wife of the late Charles Alexander Cable, Jr., (Charles Junior Cable) who was born March 10, 1927 or 1926 (two birth certificates) and who died December 29, 2000. He was called Charlie Bud or Bud. His parents were Flora Mitchell Cable and Charles Alexander Cable. He grew up on Hazel Creek and was one of 12 children:Bill, Dick, Russell, Clell, Polly, and Don are some. Others, I know the nicknames: Shortie, Nug, Bootsie.You could contact Russell or Don who live south of Marion, NC. They are younger than Bud. They are mentioned in a video about the town of Proctor.
Will Cable (Marion) was a great uncle and I think I've heard of Casper.
I know that he walked to Dry Valley (Cades Cove) to see the family of his great uncle Fonzie and aunt Sally. He spoke often of the mountains and his family. I have been to the graveyards on Hazel Creek when the forest service takes family members on Memorial Day.
I am interested in finding out if his mother, Flora Mitchell Cable is related to Elija Mitchell, who measured the height of Mt. Mitchell. Bud said that she was descended from his Indian family, maybe related to Tom, his Indian guide. Since Dr. Mitchell was a Chapel Hill professor of science, and her name was Flora, I wonder. I've heard of a former Dr. Mitchell of Asheville.
