Caines Family Genealogy Forum

Hi,
My family originally came from Hanham in Kingswood, and through searching the background of my family, came across information on the Cock Road Gang. Apparently families living within Hanham, Oldland and Bitton were all somehow related to members of it. I didn't know that Ann Caines was a Cool!
Here can be found a map of the area circa 1750 (extract from Bob Osborn's book), http://www.family-tree.freeserve.co.uk/photos/map01.gif I'm related to most of the people on that map. Ric Roberts most probably being my direct ancestor. I have tracked down my g g granfather Richard Joseph Roberts marrying Mary Barrett in the area in 1792. I'm also related to the Frys, Brittons, Meads, Lovells and of course the Barretts. The Frys were half brothers/sisters to the Caines in later years. Aron Britton married Ruth Caines circa 1800 and Henry Roberts married Judiana Caines in Gloucester which is my ancestral home. The Sweet and Hawkins family also married into the Cains.
It appears that the Cool family suffered from criminal grief before the Caines came on the scene. Once the Fry family had married into the Cools, they also seem to have suffered from the same criminal grief. Prominant names within the Cockroad Gang were the Frys, Brittons, Bryants, Brains, Haines,Wilmots although no Roberts'so far, but probably connected somehow. I have reason to belive my Roberts family were originally Quakers, their roots being in Cirencester, same as a branch of the Quaker chocolate manifacturing Frys, who were also connected with the Hanham area.
Thomas Caines pub in Sydney was called The Jolly Sailor after a pub in Hanham. I hope find this of some interest.
