Gloria, To my knowledge the African family of Calcote have descended from the numerous slaves of the Calcote family. The Calcote families in Mississippi had many slaves as did so many other families of that time.
As I understand it, the slaves took their masters surname when they were freed; because most of them had lost their name over the years.
This was a most terrible custom, but is a matter of true history. Thank goodness that no longer is the American way of life. Frances
