Some developments on James Calcutt/Calcote who left four orphans in Marion SC. The index to the Marion Probate records reveals that he died intestate in 1820 (not 1828 as I had thought) and that he left a reasonably substantial estate valued at $2500. Part of his estate was sold and payments made between 1821 and 1830 for the children's upkeep and education.
It was only after the elder daughter Hannah married Jesse Gully in 1827 that the latter petitioned for the rest of the estate to be divided up.
Contrary to what I wrote before, out ancestor Jane Brown Calcoat always gave her state of birth in later censuses as "NC" rather than "SC". Whether that is because it was true, or because she did spend the years prior to her marriage in NC, I don't yet know. If it was indeed NC, I have no idea where.
Has anyone any NC locations in 1800 or 1810 Censuses?
