I'm no expert, just a beginner, but you can look in the marriage records of that county now for a William Calderwood married to an Ella, especially watch for the year or two before the birth of their first child. The 1870 census tells how old he is so now you know the year of his birth. It also tells the state he was born in. It tells if he owned real estate. If he does you can look in the land records. You can look at the 1860 census to see if he lived in the same area, and the 1850 census should have him as a child and show his parents. Good luck.
