Dear Charles,
With reference to CastleCaldwell I have been in connect with the National Trust who control the property and we are attempting to get a lease to enable a hotel development to be created on the site by recreating the original Castle. This will undoubtedly take some time but we are confident in the Trusts approval so we can move to the planning stage.
Regarding James Caldwell, there was a James Caldwell who was a witness to a marriage in the parish of lower Longfield Drumquin in 1844(weddinng of David Liston & Eleanor Hunter of Drumoan also an unnamed Caldwell aged 24 married Jane Turner aged 21 father Thomas Caldwell of Drumrawn Farmer witness Charles Sproule.
In the encumbered estate records James Caldwell 280 acres of arable and mountain lease made to Charles Sproule son of Charles Sproule of Holme in Greenan 23 Jan 1796for the 3 lives of whom Archibald Osborne is the sole survivor when the estate was sold on the 29 June 1868.Also John,James and Oliver Sproule lease made to James Caldwell of Greenan1796 for 3 lives of whom George and John Buchanan were the Survivors, maybe grandsons.
There is a James Caldwell of Langfield (now lower Longfield Parish Drumquin)who was buried in Castlederg 1810 aged 51,there seems to be a Caldwell /Sproule connection around the Caldwells of Killen Castlederg and the Caldwell/Sproules of Greenan Drumquin. In the Tithe Allotment Book records PRONI Fin5A/204 1st May 1828 there is an Andrew Colwell registered in Lower Longfield Longfield estate was mostly owned by the Countess of Huntington PRONI ref 888 I have not accessed all records regarding these Caldwells but will look them up on my next visit to PRONI
Regards Plunkett
