Spencer L. Caldwell and Mary Ann Arnold, AL
I am trying to determine Spencer L. Caldwell family's location for the period 1850-1880.Spencer or (S. L. Caldwell in nearly every public document).S. L. Caldwell and wife Mary Ann (Arnold) are listed in the 1850 Lowndes Co, AL census with daughter Sophronia and stepson Stith M. Carter Jr. They reappear in the 1880 McMinn Co., TN census
with children Arabella (Ella), Ida Lucy (Ida),Edwina (Callie?), Buchanan (Buck)and Julia. Their eldest son, Spivy Caldwell is out of the home, married to Addie F.
Pennington and living in adjacent Loudon Co., TN.Spencer and Mary Ann Caldwell's first child Sophronia died October 10, 1855 and is buried at Gordonville Cemetery, Lowndes Co, AL.. The tombstone is reported as reading daughter ofS. A. and M. A. Caldwell, but I believe this is probably a transcribing error.Spencer and Mary Ann's tombstones in McMinn Co., TN reads S.L. Caldwell and M. A. Caldwell(Union McMinn Baptist Church Cemetery). All of Spencer and Mary Ann's children were born in Alabama which places them there until at least 1866 but I am unable to locate them in the 1860 or 1870 census.I am also unable to find a record of their marriage. As their daughter is buried at Gordonville, Lowndes Co., AL I assume that was their residence.
Spencer L. Caldwell appears to be the son of Charles Young Caldwell born about 1790 in Greene Co., NC and married to Polly Walker May 23, 1816 in Putnam Co., GA.Spencer L. Caldwell was born March 18, 1819 in GA.As children are not listed as individuals on census records before 1850 I have been unable to obtain definitive proof of Spencer and Charles Young Caldwell's relationship. It is my understanding that the will of Charles Young Caldwell is a public record; however, I have been unable to locate it.Can anyone help?
