Cales Family Genealogy Forum
Thanks for your reply! I know for a fact that Ardelia Frances Cales died of ALS and she was the wife of my great grandfather George William Olds. I knew him, but she died when I was only one. I have pictures and such of the Olds side going way back and many of my Olds relatives have traced the family way back to England. The first instance of ALS in our family was in Ardelia Frances Cales Olds. Then her son and 3 of her daughters died of ALS. Then after her son, my Grandpa George "Ray" Olds, died both his son, George "Duane"Olds and his daugher, my mom, Doris Faye Olds Fabricius died of ALS. Now Duane's 48 year old daughter is dying from it and I have been diagnosed as "suspected ALS".I am 50. Ardelia's daughter Alice Marie died of it and 2 months ago Alice's 52 year old daughter died of it.
I am very glad for you that ALS is not in your family. Now that I know that I will let the ALS researchers at Northwestern University Medical Center have that information. We are involved in a study with Dr. Teepu Siddique on Familial ALS. I was not wanting to put blame on anybody; I just really want to find family members who have evidence of this disease so they can be involved with this study. Our blood has already been key in determining that there is a second gene responsible for familial ALS. They are using the Fabricius and Olds blood from my mom and us kids and Uncle Duane's wife and 5 girls and they have narrowed it down to 3 questionable genes. I have always been sad that I didn't know Great Grandma Olds. It is interesting studying geneaology and I wouldn't have learned about the Cales and Gaines side of my family if not for ALS. I guess that is one good thing about it! Take care and keep in touch if you wish.
