There was a Caulkin at Fort Randall, Dakota Territory in the 1880s. I have a copy of a photograph that shows Caulkin with schoolchildren of Fort Randall School, and identifies him as "Dr. Caulkin, Post Teacher". He may also have been a member of an Odd Fellows Lodge made up of soldiers from the Post. The spelling, "Caulkin", may be phonetic.
Fort Randall was on the west bank of the Missouri River in southeastern Dakota Territory near the Nebraska border, and was one of the U.S. Army's frontier forts during the Indian Wars. It was abandoned in 1892.
