Rev. George Callahan/Callihan/Calluhan

My gr, gr, gr, gr, grandfather was George Callahan(sp?) born in 1766 or 65 in MD or PA. While I have a fairly complete history on the family from George forward, I can find nothing on his parents/ siblings (if any) or place of birth. In 1838 he wrote a brief article for the Western Historical Review outlining his early experience as a Methodist circuit rider on the PA,OH,WVA(still VA then), frontier. His signature on that document is either Callihan or Calluhan. The church carries him as Callahan and the family name from his children on has been Callahan.
I have looked through all sorts of archives for George Callahan with no luck. Does anyone researching the Callihan spelling have anything that might connect to this time and place. Would appreciate any help or suggestions.
