Hi Laura,
My name is Alan Moeller and I am from Lincoln, NE, USA.My maternal grandmother was a Cammenzind.Yes she spelled it with two m's for some reason. My great grandfather Wendell Cammenzind, was born near Gersau, Switzerland, March 13, 1858 to Frank and Trena Cammenzind. Gersau is a village of approximately 1900 inhabitants situated between two mountains in the center of Switzerland, next to Lake Lucerne, in the Canton (state) of Schwyz. No doubt Wendell was born on a ruebi (farm) somewhere within the Gersau vicinity.
Wendell and his four brothers immigrated to America leaving their parents behind in Switzerland. Wendell arrived in America on March 13, 1880, at the age of 22. The four brothers who also came to America were: Frank of West Point, NE.; Martin of Stockton, California;Marzel of Coleridge, NE; and Joe of Shawnee, Oklahoma.
Wendell initially settled at Benson, Nebraska and worked for an uncle who had a dairy there. He went back to Switzerland once to visit relatives when he was 44 years old.He returned to the USA through Ellis Island on August 16, 1902 on the ship La Lorraine, having left Europe from the port of Le Havre, Seine-Inferior, France.
There is a Werner Camenzind, from Alberta, Canada that I correspond with periodically. He was born in Gersau. So who knows, maybe we are related?Good luck on your contacts.
