Bill Thankyou for your message.your Charles S Cane could well be our Charles William Selby-Cane the date fits in well with ours.I haven't got much on our Selby-canes at all but i will list what i have. There is a story that also goes with this which was told to us by my Grandmother, which i am afraid is not likely to be true. Our Charles William Selby-Cane was reputed to have married a Lady Selby of Selby Abbey her name is believed to be Eberguene Selby and they became Lord and Lady Selby of Selby Abbey.it is also said that their children were born at the Abbey. As you see this is a little far fetched to be true. To the best of my knowledge no one has actually ever lived in the abbey certainly not in the 1800's.Anyway here is what i have on my Selby line.
Charles William Selby-Cane c 1830-1850? m Eberguene Selby?
Charles is listed as a Compositer for a fleet st newspaper on Alice's birth certificate..
they had 12 children
Alice Maude Selby-Cane b nov 6 1889 Camberwell London (my gg grandmother)
All of the cane sister were midwifes at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London from 1910-1915
There were 3 other children who died in infancy. I do have a picture of the Selby-Cane sisters if you think there may be a connection.
I do know that there are alot of Selby-Canes buried in London and am planning to visit them this summer.Unfortunately i don't go back any further than Charles at this moment in time but hopefully we may be looking at the same family.
