John Canote/Knode/Knodt apparently moved from Hagerstown, MD to Augusta County Georgia around the 1790s. It is believed he was from Hesse Germany, but as yet that has not been documented. He had four children, Elizabeth, who married George Sheeks (and grandmother of outlaw Sam Bass), Jacob, John, and Rosanna, who married Christian Shirley/Shally. BTW their grandaughter was the infamous Belle Star (Myra Belle Shirley). Below is a land grant to John Canote as well as info on a lawsuit between him and the Shirleys.

23d August, 1791. James Bradshaw, of Fayette County, Ky., Thomas Bradshaw and Margaret, of Augusta, to John Canote (Kanote), part of 364 acres patented to Robert Ralston, 15th December, 1749; also 25 acres patented to Thomas Bradshaw, Sr., 1st September, 1780, and became property of grantors by heirship. Teste: Thos. Groone, Jno. Nichole.

MAY, 1799 (C).
John Canote vs. Peter Shally.--Mary Shally, only daughter of Peter Shally, deposes, that about a year ago, her brother Christian, who had some time before been married to a daughter of John Canote, Sr., sister to plaintiff.

24th November, 1797. Mary Shally (Shirley) and Henry Harmon are about to remove, and also Sally Argenbright, November 17, 1797. 4th September, 1797, Christian Shally is about to remove to Kentucky.
