Dear Anne,
My husband's Grandmother was a Cant and the original Cants to come to Australia in 1844 were William and Susanna Cant nee Curtis. William Cant was born in Barkston Lincolnshire on 16.9.1793 and Susanna was born in Orfond Suffolk. William parents where Francis and Elizabeth Cant nee Green.
When William and Susanna Cant came to Australia they came in a group of 14 direct family members (their children with their spouses).
It may be that William's siblings stayed and you're a descendant of this family. Do the above names ring with you?
Love to hear from you
Helen
