English from what I've read (Canterbury, Kent, England); unless it was a sound/spell alike for the Cornish name of Scantlebury. However, there could have been a name change from a Scottish name once they got to America. Know of at least one recorded instance of a Virginia man changing his name to 'Sid Canterbury' just before the Amer. Rev. (Ref. Amer. Rev. Pension requests).
