Hello,
Here is a puzzle I have been struggling with for some time. My g-grandmother was Lela Canterburry, born 5 Sep 1894 in Melissa, Collin County, Texas. She married a man named John Ball, we believe in Texas. Later she married George Thomas Miller, 11 Jan 1926 in Roswell, New Mexico.
I have her birth and death cerificates. Her father is listed as John Canterburry, born 23 Jan 1875 in Galliopalice, Ohio. Her mother's maiden name is listed as Viva Vaughn, born 1873 in Cass County, Texas. We believe she died in 1935, also in Texas.
My problem? I can't find them on any census. I can find Lela & George Miller and their kids in 1930, but nothing showing her with her parents. It's like they appeared out of thin air on her birth certificate. I have also found her in the 1920 census with John Ball, and apparently a sister named Mae Canterburry (first we had heard of it!) I can't find any documentation John Canterburry and Viva Vaughn ever existed except on her birth certificate.
The family sometimes spells her name Canterberry, or Canterbury, but on all the official documents I have it is Canterburry. Even with all that documentation I am stuck stuck stuck on this one. Any info appreciated.
