Canterbury- Skillman Connection
Posted by: Danny Skillman (ID *****7055) Date: July 15, 2006 at 23:21:24

I am not directly related to the Canterbury family. But this family at one time was tightly interwoven with the Skillman's, Bolton's and Lindsay's. I am trying to find out as much as possible about a John Aaron Canterbury, and his daughter Rebecca as possible, to help me understand my family more. I will explain the connection below:

Elizabeth Rebecca (Skillman)Bolton, (the wife of Joseph Bolton) was the daughter of David Randolph Skillman and Rebecca Canterbury. David's younger brother Elijah B. Skillman was my GG-Grandfather. David Skillman's parents were Isaac Skillman and Lydia Lindsay. Rebecca (Canterbury) Skillman's father was John A.Canterbury- mother unknown.

Some believe Lydia was her mother- this is incorrect. Lydia did remarry to John Canterbury, Rebecca's father, but it was in 1820 in Bibb Co. AL after her first husband Isaac Skillman had died about 1819. Most researchers I have talked with agree that, David Skillman the 19 year old son of Lydia Skillman, married his step-sister Rebecca the daughter of John A. Canterbury. Wich was no problem, they were grown, and not kin. I have seen much worse in researching back in those days. My niece and I have quite a bit of info on the Skillman side and Allied families. Would like to learn more on the Canterbury line, and would love to share info. Our families came from Shelby Co. AL, Tishomingo, MS and McNairy Co. TN as well. Many Canterbury's show up in these counties as well as many other we have researched. Thanks Danny J. Skillman,
