Helena Florence Canton born May 17, 1885 was adopted in 1893 by William H. Sterrett and his wife Mary Elizabeth Grismer Sterrett in Evansville, Indiana. She was taken to Chicago and visited the World's Fair there that year in about June and never returned to the orphan's home she grew up in. In Vanderburg County Indiana there was an epidemic of tuberculosis around the time she was said to be in school. Helena was said to have been a Cherokee mixed blood, she had dark auburn hair and gray eyes and was short, only 5 foot tall. She always told me that she was Cherokee and Irish.
