Many of those Balto., MD marriage records on the IGI show marriages occurring at First Methodist Episcopal Church in Baltimore [i.e., City]; however, when you click Source, it usually comes up as a license issued by a court. I've seen the Methodist Church shown even when the marriage was performed by a Baptist minister. In this case (Caples and Green), it was performed by Rev. Dr. Bend, according to the book Caples Genealogy (by Edwards, Thompson and England). His name could have been obtained from the index card file at Md. State Archives, or perhaps from the license records themselves. I don't have an exact citation for you, and a search fee might cost $20. However, when I was there in 2005, a volunteer helped me find the citation for a license in 1815. That one began: BALTIMORE COUNTY COURT (Marriage Licenses) MSA C376, dates 1815-1823. That might aid in finding the citation for 1793. Rev. Dr. Bend, however, was a Protestant Episcopal minister/rector of St. Paul's Parish. His marriage records (i.e., his annual certification to the Treasurer) are in MARYLAND STATE PAPERS (Scharf Collection), titled: Bend, Joseph G.J., Rector (St. Paul's Parish, BA) to Western Shore Treasurer. Marriage List, Nov. 22, 1792-Nov. 27, 1793. I have the MSA, Accession and Location nos. if you want those. However, I reviewed Bend's records, and the marriage of William CAPLES and Elizabeth GREEN by license dated 8/21/1793 was not listed. I do not doubt that a license return was made by Rev. Dr. Bend. I have seen several instances where the license identified the minister's name, and yet for some unknown reason the minister failed to include a record of the marriage in his annual list. Perhaps he overlooked it, and the omission was inadvertent. Also, I remember at least one instance where the name of one minister was shown on the county listing of license records, and where a different minister (of the same denomination) ended up making the license return (and perhaps performing the ceremony).
