I descend from King Hiram Caplinger, Benton Co., TN, in 1850.Seems like there was a John Caplinger recorded in the court house back before that.I just got back to the Caplinger search in recent times but did quite a bit of research back in the 1970's.My mother passed away with serious Alzheimer's and they say to keep your brain active to fend off that dreaded disease, so I am working all Caplingers to keep my curiosity peaked and see where that leads. Back to your family - Yes, the two "S" characters were in the 1860 census. Then in the 1870 census there was William S. and the death record for Wesley.I'm content with your explanation because I see some really bad mistakes in the censuses. But I will always be alert about 2 "S"s in 60, William in 70, and Wesley in 1923.
