Hi Ian,
I have traced my family back as far as 1738,although I live in the NE of England as do most of my immediate family my fathers immediate family come from Scarborough on the coast of Yorkshire.
I am in the process of exchanging details with Jeanie in Ohio USA, and hopefully will be able to make a link between or two families.
I am still trying to find out where the name originated, my parents always said that it was German/Scandinavian, any clues?

all the best
