the book was correct up to a point.luis did know he was jewish, he was forced to convert and was then known as a 'Marrano', in hebrew as anusim. the family was well known and extensive.when the dominicans came to take him away, his mother, Maria, was also taken.other family members moved to what is now new mexico, far away from the reach of the inquisition. he and maria were executed in mexico city in the main plaza in what is known as an "auto de fe".others that did not escape were incarcerated in cells were they died of malnutrition (3) because they would not renounce their jewish faith. decendents were several...jacobo, luis, francisco, daniel and bernardo were some of the male names.if you are of the family, you know it.check your family customs and family history.
